Rejser til Avignon
Avignon is a busy city and hosts the annual Festival d’Avignon, one of the most important performing arts events in the world.
With its spectacular monuments and museums, ancient churches, chapels and impressively decorated buildings, Avignon is a feast for cultural vultures. But the rivers, gorges and limestone peaks of the surrounding area also make it a great destination for an outdoor activity holiday.
Avignon’s most interesting attractions are located in the oval walled city, surrounded by 4.3 km of ramparts, built in the 14th century. The city’s most classic shopping streets, Rue Saint Agricol and the northern part of Rue Joseph Vernet, are located just west of Place de l’Horlogue.
The Palais du Papes is a huge Gothic structure built in the 14th century as a fortified palace for medieval popes. The colossal structure weaves impressively over the cobbled Place du Palais complete with its stone vaults and locks to pour hot oil on invaders. Now Avignon’s leading tourist attraction, it forms an excellent backdrop for the Festival d’Avignon, held every July.
The annual Festival d’Avignon starts in the second week of July and runs for three weeks. Considered one of the most important performing arts events in the world, the focus is on theater, but you will also find dance, lectures, exhibitions and classical music. The city’s historic buildings and monuments form a spectacular backdrop for the performances.
The 12th-century Pont St-Bénézet originally reached just over to Villeneuve-les-Avignon and was the only place to cross the mighty Rhône between Lyon and Marseille. The bridge has been immortalized in the song Sur le pont d’Avignon written for 19th-century French operettas depicting the lust of the locals as they danced on the Ile de Barthelasse on holidays.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape 17 km north of Avignon produces wines that are among the most famous in the world. The Fête de la Véraison is held during the first full weekend in August, celebrating the ripening of the grapes, and the village erupts with free wine tastings, parades, dances and folklore floats. At other times of the year, try the wine at the Musée du Vin on Avenue Pierre-de-Luxembourg or pick up a list of producers at the tourist office and visit the local vineyards.
