Visit Auxerre
Auxerre provides a visitor with the brilliance of the Burgundy region and a chance to embrace the history of central France. Walk along the city streets and you’ll encounter incredible wonders, such as the Cathedral of St. Etienne with its 3 doorways that have stunning bas-reliefs. The sanctuary at the Cathedral has some of the best stained glass installations in the country.
Or there’s the Abbey of Saint-Germain to visit, which has been there since the 9th century. The crypt at the abbey houses the tomb of the bishops of Auxerre, along with the oldest mural paintings that are known to exist currently in France. There is also the old town to explore when visiting Auxure. The Clock tower is particularly notable, though the views with the Abbey in the background are stunning in any light.
You’ve got the Church of St. Eusebe to consider here as well, which was founded in the 7th century. The nave of the church was rebuilt in the 13th century, giving it more of a Romanesque look. Or there’s the Church of St. Pierre en Vallee, built in the 17th century over a 6th century abbey. It provides a late Gothic appearance, but a tower that complements the look of the cathedral. Local vineyards helped to finance the decorations found in some of the inner chapels.
And that’s before addressing the fact that Auxerre places you right in the area where Burgundy wines are created, with a world-famous Chablis available to grace your lips on-demand. It is a city that brings art and history together in magnificent ways and it will become one of your favorite places.
