The town of Arras has enough art, culture and history to entertain anyone during their visit, but you will also immediately feel at home in this town with its charming café culture and friendly locals.
Place des Héros is one of two beautiful squares in Arras, the other is Grand Place and is home to the city’s stunning town hall along with a number of houses, shops and restaurants. Some of the houses are copies of those destroyed in World War I.
A visit to the town hall itself will surely amaze you due to its art deco design, beautiful gold details, wood carvings and murals. From the 75 meter high bell tower you get a bird’s eye view of Place des Héros and the city. Under the town hall you can visit Les Boves, a network of caves that were used for storage in the 10th century and also played an important role during the First World War.
Arras has a number of museums that will definitely keep you busy if you want to know more about some of the city’s fascinating history. For tapestries, historical works of art, sculptures and a variety of collections showing everything from coins to photographs, go to the Musée des Beaux-Arts where you will find all these things and much more! Located in the Benedictine Monastery of Saint-Vaast, this museum looks as stunning from the outside as it does when you are among the works of art.
If you are interested in finding out more about the cover of Arras (1917), you will love the Wellington Tunnels, which form part of the tunnel network used by soldiers during the war. This museum was opened to remember those who built the tunnels and died in battle and has lots of fascinating exhibits and information.
