Visit Adana

Adana, which lies in southern Turkey, is one of the most agriculturally rich cities within the entire country. The city itself has had many names throughout history and there is much in myth and legend surrounding the founding of the city. Some even feel that this is the city called “Coa” where King Solomon purchased his horses, which is documented in the Bible. Homer, however, calls the city Adana in his great work the “Iliad,” and that is how it is known today. The city, because it is the gateway to such a great, fertile plain, has been at the center of many wars.

The Old Mosques of Adana

Adana has always been central in Arab culture, so although much of the city of Adana is quite modern, there are many old mosques within the city that date back to the 16th century. Be sure to get some photos of the minaret at Ulu Cami where Seljuk and Mamluk styles converge before you travel over to see the spectacular Sabanci Merkez Camii. Make sure you’re in the correct lane of traffic, however, because you don’t want to have to try to cross six lanes of traffic! You’ll also want to make sure you schedule your time around the daily calls to prayer because the interiors cannot be toured during prayer times.

Take a Walk at Merkez Park

Considered the central park of Adana, after you’ve taken a tour of the mosque, you’ll want to stay and take a walk at the adjoining park. It is a beautiful greenspace where you can be able to take a few moments to cool off from the intimidating sunshine. There are a series of wonderful fountains on the edge of the park, as well as a walking trail around the park if you are so inclined. Don’t forget the kids – there are playgrounds at the park for them as well. It’s the perfect place to bring a sack lunch, sit in the grass, and enjoy the blue skies.

Get a Taste of History at the Archaeology Museum

Being able to see the tomb of Medusa is enough enticement to take the time to visit this museum, but there is much more to see and do. With artifacts that incorporate almost all of the different eras of history that Adana has been part of, you’ll be able to see Hittite statues and Ottoman coins all in the same visit. Though it is one of the oldest archeology museums, it still manages to offer a modern feel as your browse amongst the artifacts. It’s the perfect way to escape Adana heat!
